<image:caption>Mono Lake Basin above the Clouds A thick winter cloud inversion settles into the Mono Lake Basin, leaving nothing but a smooth layer of clouds filling the valley below. From the overlook off Highway 395, the whole basin feels hidden under a soft white blanket, with only the distant Wassuk Range in Nevada rising above it. Their ridgelines float just high enough to catch the light, giving the scene this calm, otherworldly feel.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mirror World Lake Manly appears as a thin, impossible sheet of water spread across the salt flats of Badwater Basin, turning the lowest point in North America into a vast mirror. Mountains stretch upside‑down across its surface, clouds drift in it as if they’ve come to rest. It looks less like a body of water and more like the sky has slipped down to touch the earth. What makes it extraordinary is how rarely it exists at all. Death Valley is one of the driest places in the World, and most years the basin holds nothing but cracked salt polygons and shimmering heat. Only after unusually heavy rains does enough water collect to form a true lake. Even then, it’s temporary. Sun, wind, and evaporation begin erasing it almost immediately. To see Lake Manly is to catch the desert in a moment of forgetfulness, when it briefly remembers its Ice Age past. It’s a sight most visitors never witness. Lake Manly, at least ephemerally, returns.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Darwin Canyon from Lamarck Col: A Moonscape From the lofty threshold of Lamarck Col, perched at over 13,000 feet, the view plunges into the surreal depths of Darwin Canyon--a stark moonscape carved by ancient ice and time. The sky above broods with heavy, mottled clouds, their charcoal blotches drifting like ink across a pale canvas. Yet through the smoke-filtered veil, sunrays pierce in dramatic shafts, their diffuse light made possible by a distant wildland fire, unseen but felt and smelled. Below, four unnamed lakes lie nestled in the canyon’s granite cradle, strung together like beads on a forgotten necklace. Their surfaces shimmer faintly, catching the fractured light as it dances across stone and shadow. The terrain is austere, almost lunar, with fractured ridgelines and glacial polish giving way to silence and stillness. It’s a landscape that feels both alien and sacred.</image:caption>

The rugged granite spires of Granite Park loom in the background, adding to the dramatic beauty of the scene. A shooting star streaks across the sky, captured serendipitously in the middle of the frame. This photograph, taken about 100 feet from my campsite at an elevation of 11,300 feet, is a composite of two exposures: a 15-second shot at ISO 4000 for the sky and a 30-second shot at ISO 6400 for the foreground, both at 14mm, f/2.8. <image:caption>Milky Way and Shooting Star over Granite Park In the serene expanse of Granite Park, within the John Muir Wilderness of the Inyo National Forest, the Milky Way rises majestically over an unnamed alpine lake, casting a magical reflection on the water's surface. This image epitomizes the stunning and serene beauty of the high Sierra night sky.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Death Valley National Park</image:title>

<image:caption>Hunted Fish, Osprey, and the Loch Ness Monster An osprey sweeps over the salty expanse of Mono Lake, talons locked around the day’s hard‑won catch—likely plucked from one of the clear, cold rivers or lakes spilling out of the Eastern Sierra. Behind it rises a towering tufa spire, its silhouette uncannily echoing the shape of the Loch Ness Monster as it looms over the water. The moment feels both wild and whimsical, a collision of real predator and imagined legend in one of California’s strangest, most beautiful landscapes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Granite Park Sunrise At dawn in Granite Park, Inyo National Forest, an unnamed lake sits tranquil in the foreground, dotted with rocky outcrops that break the water's surface. The stillness of the lake contrasts with the dramatic peaks in the background, bathed in the soft, golden light of the rising sun. This moment captures the raw beauty and serene power of nature at its finest.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Milky Way and Shooting Star over Granite Park In the serene expanse of Granite Park, within the John Muir Wilderness of the Inyo National Forest, the Milky Way rises majestically over an unnamed alpine lake, casting a magical reflection on the water's surface. This image epitomizes the stunning and serene beauty of the high Sierra night sky.</image:caption>
